Off the wagon, on the bike

Greetings everyone! This week has been good. So far, I feel like I've been consistent in a) eating more fruits and veggies and b) working out at the gym. But I am agog at the sugar content (30 grams) of an apparently innocuous container of yogurt. 1/3 of the total weight from sugar?! Dude! So, maybe another way to put calcium into my diet. Maybe adding just a bit of sugar to plain yogurt...that way I control the amount of sugar. (BTW: I hate fake sugar. It tastes gross to me, so I don't eat that low-carb or sugar-free stuff.)

My husband and I made homemade salted caramels to celebrate the inauguration. Apparently, President Obama and his wife really like them. So we made them over the weekend and only about 1/2 of the batch made its way to the lab on Tuesday. Delicious, and a great treat. I'm looking forward to the next time I get to make them.

As for next week, I'll be conferencing. Less working out, more temptation. I'll be coming here often for strength and panache in the face of a bakery the size of a city block.

:) LJS

I remember back 30 years ago when yogurt was usually natural and sugar free, and not easy to find. Then the big food comapanies began marketing their consumer friendly flavored and sweetened varieties. I must admit the natural yogurt isn't very fun to eat but the stuff on the shelves now is almost candy...

I had my first cup of Greek Yogurt yesterday, which is lower in fat and sugar. Stonyfield Farm Organic, plain, 5.8 oz cup has 7g of sugar. To sweeten is I dumped in some pineapple. It was quite tasty.

You COULD always make your own yogurt.

We'll be here for you, conference or not. this is turning in to a GREAT place to get a little pick-me-up to keep on-a going.

Try plain, fat free yogurt. I add extracts and frozen fruit (and sometimes honey) for sweetener.

Renn, that's a good idea about the yogurt. I don't like the way fake sweeteners make my teeth feel. I'll have to try that!

I cannot STAND the pink or the blue packets. But the yellow? Man, I LOVE THAT STUFF!!! I even use the "brown sugar" version of it on my plain oatmeal on the weekends. To me, it tastes just like sugar. But I know that there are some people for whom it just reacts all nasty on their taste buds. I suppose there are people who like the pink and blue as well.

Consider calcium pills. I take the caltrate fruit flavored chewables. not only is is calcium, but they are sweet and fruity, so it's kinda like having candy (only kinda)
