Don't they SOUND healthy?

This recipe grabbed from the first site that had a link to "wheat germ cookies," because we have a bottle of wheat germ in the cabinet that needs et.

WHEAT GERM COOKIES

1/2 c. oil
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. whole wheat flour
1 c. wheat germ
1/2 c. honey
1 tsp. salt
1 c. quick oats
1/2 c. milk
Chopped nuts (optional)

Mix well. Drop by spoonful onto oiled cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.

(Ed note: no mention in the recipe of how BIG the spoonful should be, or how many calories per nebulously sized spoonful-o-dough, or nuttin.' Frustrating. HOWEVER, it beats throwing out a rancid batch of wheat germ, becaue the stuff doesn't last forever no matter how much you want it to.)

Somethings else to do with wheat germ:

- mix with yogurt
- cereal topper
- stealthy pancake-mix add-in
- splendiferous addition to banana-nut muffins (esp the "Laurel's Kitchen" variety)

Probably lots more, but these are the few I've used lately in my quest for nutrition-packed hippe-style eatin'. Y'all have more ideas? Let us know, or tell us about your new fave food...hippie-style or no.

I have never eaten wheat germ. I am germ-o-phobic! :)

My favorite hippie foods are the tasty, tasty garden burgers.

According to my calculations the total carbs in those ingredients equals 401grams.
Let's say you'll get 24 cookies from that recipe. If you do, they will be 24 VERY small cookies. Maybe two bites if you're a bashfull eater. . . are there any bashful eaters here?
One small cookie from this batch is going to provide 16.7g carbohydrates. That's well above what I can take in to lose weight on my low-carb diet.
Two of those little bitty cookies will be 33g which will put weight ON me when I'm doing low carb.
Even if I'm not doing low-carb dieting I wouldn't want to partake of something THAT high in carbs and LOW in satisfaction value. I'll just go get a small piece of chocolate cake.
But hey, no butter, no real fat if you use skim milk. . . if that works for you, go for it.

Cookies, unless they are unusually craptastic, generally spell disaster for me. If I were to find myself with any wheat germ, I'd likely use it with my new friend, greek yogurt.

I just know I'd be adding chocolate chips to these...

Sag H - yep, lots of carbs, but also protein and fiber too. Certainly NOT good for the low-carb lovers among us, but perhaps a reasonable option for folks who are looking to put a little 'oomph' in their poison of choice. :)

They mean teaspoons.

Sprinkle wheat germ on top of salad in lieu of nuts.

Mix wheat germ with standard 'trail mix'.

Add wheat germ to oatmeal or other hot cereal.

Eat wheat germ hot in lieu of oatmeal.

I believe that "You - On a Diet" has a few recipes that include wheat germ in them. It's a great book, if you'd like to borrow it.
